For an early Witchcraft manual, complete Smoke and Ashes and then Bear Trouble. Cross northwest of Briar Sloughs tower, follow the mountain chimes, use Focus to track the trail, deal with the bear, then inspect the body, knife, and glyph. Only after collecting and reading Ravenous Flock does its matching Witchcraft node become eligible to buy; the manual does not equip the skill automatically.
Available manual routes
| Manual | Route | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Ravenous Flock | Bear Trouble glyph | Get and read it |
| Cycle of Ruin | Cursed Chasm circle | Location and trial |
| Mercurial Fervour | Convent library | Clear the route |
Know what a manual actually unlocks
Witchcraft, sword, and vampire abilities use different branches. A manual satisfies a prerequisite for its matching node; you still need to return to that branch and meet its Skill Point and learning-time requirements. If the book is still in your inventory or the node still says a manual is missing, it has not been read yet.
Ravenous Flock is an early Witchcraft manual corroborated by route guides. This page gives the route-to-unlock flow. For a closer check of the mountain path, bear, or glyph, follow the Bear Trouble Ravenous Flock route step by step before leaving the area.
Set up the route before you leave
- Open the journal and confirm Smoke and Ashes is complete. If it is not, do not treat the missing trail as a broken marker.
- Go to Briar Sloughs tower, cross from its northwest side, then listen for chimes and follow the uphill route marked by cairns with yellow cloth.
- With your weapon sheathed, hold right mouse button to use Focus. Use it to identify tracks and interactable clues. If you rebound controls, follow the current in-game prompt.
- Read the hourglass or time prompt before confirming key interactions. This quest includes a time commitment; backing out before confirmation is safer than treating the prompt as an error.
Follow the chimes to the bear clearing
- Follow the chimes and cairns uphill. At the abandoned camp, stop rather than continuing along the widest visible path.
- Turn on Focus near the camp and look for the trail of footprints. Following those tracks leads to the bear’s clearing.
- Resolve the bear encounter. On PC, move plus Space dodges, and middle mouse locks a target; create space for charge or slam attacks, then act in the opening after the attack ends.
- Do not fast-travel away after the bear falls. The combat result alone does not complete the manual route; the scene investigation updates the journal.
Inspect these clues after the fight
- Check the body on the west side of the clearing, including its forearm wound. Then investigate the bloody knife near the stones.
- Return to the central stone circle and examine the glyph. If a time confirmation appears, read it and then choose whether to proceed.
- Open the journal again after the glyph and check the reward area for Ravenous Flock.
- If the journal still says to explore the summit, revisit the body, knife, and glyph in that order. Do not use the defeated bear as your completion check.
Read the book, then buy the node
- Press
Ifor inventory and select Ravenous Flock. With default PC bindings, pressEnterto read it; use the item-screen prompt if controls were rebound. - The manual disappears from inventory once read. That is normal: it unlocks eligibility for a node, rather than purchasing the node by itself.
- Open the Witchcraft branch and find the matching Ravenous Flock node. If it remains unavailable, check the node’s Skill Point and learning-time requirements before looking for another copy.
- Confirm the node after buying it. Witchcraft is usable during the day; if you try to test a spell at night, check your current form and the UI restriction first.
Use the symptom to find the missing step
If the chime route seems to vanish, return to the northwest river crossing by Briar Sloughs tower and use Focus again; do not substitute an unverified mountain route. If the bear is down but no manual appears, inspect the body, forearm wound, knife, and glyph. If the manual was read but the node cannot be bought, inspect the matching Witchcraft node, Skill Points, and time requirement rather than the inventory.
PC Gamer also identifies Soul Stigma at an Ancient Circle northeast of St. Tyna’s Grove as a later Witchcraft-manual lead. Its full interaction sequence is unconfirmed in the sources used here, so use it as a location lead only and do not assume arrival grants a manual.
If you are already running Echoes of Silenced Bells, search the top floor of St. Tyna's Convent library before moving the bookcase: the cited source places an extra Mercurial Fervour Manual there. Follow the convent library route for the keys, bell decision, and the bookcase checkpoint; it is an extra copy for an ability unlocked around the end of the prologue, not a replacement for Ravenous Flock.
