The Cycle of Ruin Manual can be collected from the Ancient Circle at the west end of the Cursed Chasm in far-west Briar Sloughs. Start from Coward's Path Shrine, use the map to find the descending path into the ravine, then complete the circle's inspection, altar, trial, and chest sequence. Reaching the ruin or winning the encounter alone is not the check: open the reward chest, read the manual from inventory, and confirm that the matching Witchcraft node is available.
Set the correct destination before you descend
- Open the map and find Coward's Path Shrine in Briar Sloughs. PC Gamer places this Cycle of Ruin source at the west end of the Cursed Chasm, with a map path descending into the ravine from northwest of the shrine.
- Set a marker on the Ancient Circle or on the chasm path. Do not identify the location by a nearby Shrine alone: the useful landmark is the ravine descent followed by a carved monument in a clearing.
- If the Ancient Circle marker has not appeared yet, explore the region or reveal points of interest through a Tower, then return to the map. A white ruins icon identifies an Ancient Circle once revealed; a shrine or haunted site is not a substitute target.
Meet the conditions before trying to activate the altar
- Arrive during the day in Coen's Human form. The documented Ancient Circle flow does not start at night or while in vampire form, so change state first instead of repeatedly using the altar.
- Track the Ancient Circles objective in the journal. The location may have its own journal title, which is a stronger completion check than trying to count map pins by memory.
- Keep your weapon sheathed when you need to investigate. On the documented PC defaults, hold right mouse for Focus while sheathed; when an investigation or interaction prompt appears, use the binding currently shown on screen. If you changed your bindings, the live Controls screen wins.
Do not assume that merely standing inside the ruins has started the activity. The circle still needs its inspection phase and the altar interaction before its guardians and reward chest are available.
Inspect the monument until the journal changes
- Use Focus around the carved monument and inspect every highlighted fresco or debris interaction. Continue until Coen indicates there is nothing more to inspect, rather than stopping after the first prompt.
- Watch the objective after each inspection. The change to “Figure out how to start the trial” confirms that this phase is complete; if the old exploration objective remains, return to the monument for another highlighted clue.
- If there is no highlighted object, step back, sheath your weapon, activate Focus again, and sweep the monument from a different side. Do not begin searching unrelated nearby ruins, because that makes it hard to tell whether the inspection state actually advanced.
The state change matters more than a particular animation. It tells you that the Ancient Circle is ready for its next interaction and prevents wasting time trying the altar too early.
Start and finish the trial in the right order
- Stay in Focus and examine the ground in front of the monument. The cracked altar nearby becomes the intended interaction after the inspection phase.
- Use Astral Communion at that altar, following the ability prompt shown in your game. Do not copy an unverified keyboard shortcut: players may remap controls, and the on-screen prompt identifies the action that starts the trial.
- Deal with the summoned guardians, then read the journal. When the final enemy falls, the documented objective changes to “Search the chest.” That is your signal to stop looking for another altar step.
For ordinary attacks, use the directional block or dodge controls currently shown in your Controls menu. This route does not require a verified enemy count, damage total, fixed weapon, or combat time, so none is presented as a requirement.
Take the manual and make the skill available
- Search the reward chest after the trial. For this Cursed Chasm route, PC Gamer lists the Cycle of Ruin Manual as the notable manual source; use the acquisition prompt and inventory item name rather than guessing from the chest's appearance.
- Press I, select the Cycle of Ruin Manual in inventory, and read it. A manual in the bag is not yet an unlocked skill; reading it is the action that makes its matching development node available for purchase.
- Open the Witchcraft tree and inspect Cycle of Ruin. If it is available to purchase, the manual gate is clear; any remaining Skill Point or hourglass condition must be read from that node before confirming a purchase.
This page covers one verified acquisition route, not every copy of the manual in the game. If you collect it from a different reward or vendor, the same inventory-reading and Witchcraft-node check still confirms whether that copy worked.
Fix the common failures without guessing
If the trial will not start, check the three state gates in order: daytime, Human form, then a journal objective updated by monument inspection. Only after those are true should you return to the altar. If a chest appears but the activity stays open, make sure you actually searched the chest; winning the encounter does not replace that final interaction.
If the manual is in inventory but Cycle of Ruin remains unavailable, read the book again and verify that you are looking in Witchcraft rather than a different tree. Then inspect the node's displayed conditions. This separates a missing manual from an unmet Skill Point or time cost without inventing values.
